We came home with two little piglets (Daisy and Duke) from Doug's older brother's house. Once we got them out of the dog kennel and into the pin that Doug threw together quickly, I encouraged my hubby to put hay bales around the perimeter of the hog pen to prevent escape artists.... Let me just say for the record "I told him!"
Well around 11pm last night we were in our warm p.j.s and brushing our teeth when we began to hear little snorts outside our bathroom window. Sure enough we had two little piglets running around free.
So we quickly ran to the garage to get some shoes. I quickly put on my chacos and a jacket. Doug put on his crocks and a jacket. Once we got that done we ran outside to try and corner those pigs. Doug chased after "DUKE" and I got the honors of chasing after "Daisy".
So let me paint you a picture of what we looked like during those fun moments:
It is pitch black outside, No outside lights, in the rain storm, both in our p.j.s and in sandal feet. I am not saying we are the smartest people in the world.. and after last night I know we are definitely not the smartest people in our town!!
Well after Doug chased "Duke" two fields behind us, he finally gave up on that piglet and came back to help me with mine. I had chased "daisy" around the front yard and back to the barnyard. By the way, did you know that pigs are some really fast little buggers. Yeup ... well they are!!
I now can say that I have climbed every fence in a mile and a half radius of our house at least 5 times each. Half and hour later we cornered her in our neighbors yard. (which by the way the neighbors were not to happy when I knocked on their door to tell them that my husband and I would be running around in their field and yard in the wee hours of the night.) Daisy made a quick jump in to the ditch filled with some water to try and escape us. Doug (being my hero) jumps in the ditch to chase her. I got on the end of the ditch and headed his way. By the grace of the heaven we were able to catch "Daisy". There was lots of mud flying and squealing ( I think from both Daisy and Doug) by the time we had the one piglet caught!
Well when we caught her she began to Squeal (Really Really loud). So if our neighbors had been sleeping... they sure weren't now.
So back at the barnyard we put Daisy back in the dog kennel and began our search for Duke. Might I mention once again that it is still raining at this time. I am tromping around in the horse corral in my cotton p.js and sandals. (NOT A PRETTY SIGHT)
Doug yells out that he thinks he sees this piglet across the fence in the neighbor's field again. So instead of going all the way around our property to get in the field he tells me to go through the fence which is four barb-wires high with an electric line on the very top.
"Sure why not just jump that fence"!
Sadly I tried to climb through the fence and was almost there when my p.j. pants got caught on the barb-wire and made me yank on it, that set me off balance and I hit the top wire. OUCH!!!!
I yelped with pain and then jabbed myself again on the stupid barb-wire and then got zapped yet again. By the time I got my p.j. pants untangled I was really feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.. (NOT!!)
By the way I think our neighbor has that fence on way way to high!!! I am no expert on that, but I am just saying....!
So all that work to get across the fence and there was no piglet in sight at all.. What a waste of my energy and dignity!!
We finally decided to call it quits around midnight-ish. Once inside we got a good look at ourselves and couldn't help but laugh for another 20minutes. I was covered from head to toe in mud, water, and I think horse poop. Doug was covered in all that plus he had had a run in with some loose barb-wire in our neighbor's field, so from the knees down was covered in cuts and blood. Being the sweet nurse that I am, I began to clean and put medication on it. When all was said and done it looked like a kindergartner had a hay-day with band aids. I totally blame it on the fact that I still had a buzz from the fence incident! I wasn't my usual self! haha
We peeled what was left of our once warm p.j.s off and had a warm shower, we were finally ready for bed... once again.
*** 3 hours later****
I am happy to say that "Duke" finally made his way back to the barnyard this morning (without our help) and was sleeping next to "Daisy" 's container. Doug cornered him and put both our little adorable piglets in our horse trailer. I know it doesn't sound like an ideal place for pigs... but that is all we have and all the effort we care to put into restraining them right now.
Other than that our lifes are usually pretty boring. The only lasting side effect of last night is a dull pain in my right deltoid from the fence incident and Doug's scratches which are healing nicely.
SO I hope all is so much better in your neck of the woods than ours. Love you tons!!
